I see many people commenting along the lines of "I will only buy from big trusted sellers from now on"
People being more wary of less established sellers could make it harder for us little guys to flip a few coins.
And buyers could miss out on potential deals as they dont want to take a chance on less established sellers.
So this is a very sad crime with wider effects then first apparent.
I hope the trust can be restored with time and that those directly effected can get their money back.

It's a complex thing to sort
For me an intermediary service doubles the risk a person has the coins and the cash double bubble if they were to go AWOL

The scammer that this tread is referring to scammed at least 4 members I think. None of those 4 members have left trading feedback. The only member that did leave trading feedback had nothing to do with the transaction.
How is that a good indication on how trusted a member is?

I don't think anyone is saying anything bad about the forum but there are over 21,000 members here and 700 are premium paying members. Surely some constructive discussion about members thoughts is a good thing with a view of boosting confidence and essentially boosting the numbers.

I completely understand your points and they are very valid, I guess it's by no means a perfect system, but we make the best of it because it's the system we have. I don't think I've ever tried to be popular, I was born this way😆 but I do take great pleasure in being trusted, I'm from the school of my word is my bond ( becoming a rarity) outside this forum especially. As an aside, I put more faith in a members interaction than I do feedback, it tells me more about their character which puts me at ease during a deal. Feedback is only half the story in my book.

Just something about "building reputation" or trying to win a popularity contest for the sake of selling a few quids worth of silver now and again just rubs me the wrong way. That's fine, it's not for me. I want to sell on my terms and not basically just hope some random stranger on the internet is going to do the right thing just because he/she is in "the trusted ranks". But as I've stated a few times, I get why this situation exists and understand why you guys like it, and that's great for you. More power to you.
It's really not much of an issue for me anyway, I didn't join this forum to buy or sell, I originally just joined for conversation with like minded people on the subject of stacking and PM. And on that side of things I have found this place to be great, lots of knowledgeable and friendly people here.

I don't doubt it works exceptionally well, very well for the trusted. Not so well for the new people who still have to worry that they won't be ripped off on the word of other forum users saying "don't worry he is fine" Just look at the recent example, the guy who scammed, people vouched for him using the trust point system here, he used that trust to make his final transaction here an act of theft. But as I said, i get it, we live in a dangerous world with scammers everywhere, of course no system is perfect. I'm not saying the system here is bad, I just have my concerns about it.

It might be my loss, but I'm not too concerned about my reputation, no one here will be buying from me because I won't be selling. Not because I don't like the people here, i actually like a lot of you, you seem like really nice people.

I wasn't actually really making an argument. I was just posting my feelings on the matter, my opinion. I think I mentioned that. I also stated I understand the reasons for the policy of trusted members receiving goods first then paying later.

Been here for awhile and already been involved in conversations. I mostly lurk here to read topics that interest me. But as I mentioned, I'm not that concerned about my rep because I probably won't be buying or selling on here. I like the people here, you all seem like nice people, but I think the trust system you have here is flawed for the reasons I already stated.

I'm saddened to read this thread, but I'm happy that people who got scammed can get their money back. I initially thought this person might have fallen ill or had an accident, making it impossible to contact. However, if they've already started sending empty packages, it's clear that this person is not trustworthy.
I always believe that individuals like this are short-sighted and don't consider the future. The profit they could have made over the years far exceeds what they can con people out of now. Unfortunately, such individuals exist, and they will resurface elsewhere at some point, or someone else will turn to such activities. Horrible stories are circulating, with some individuals having scammed hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The foundation of this community is built on trust. Everyone has their methods of conducting due diligence checks, and it's valuable that many people have shared their approaches. However, I don't believe there's a one-size-fits-all solution. My advice is for both buyers and sellers to perform thorough due diligence checks and trust your instincts. Sometimes, it's best to walk away, no matter how tempting a deal may seem, if your instincts raise doubts

Is inflation hitting buyers?  Things I have suggested to the RM this year.
1 drastically reduce mintage of proof sovereigns for the next few years.

2 to make the 5 sets exclusive without “b a stardising the sovereign” mint the full sovereign in the set with a streamer as the full normally comes without
3 make semi collectible bullion sovereigns,  12 month subscription for shield back bullion sovereigns with monthly random die numbers.
4 been asking for this for a while, not fake modern hammered gold, but real hand hammered modern gold coins,
HYO coins on the VIP tour?

I still think of myself as a newbie, but I guess checking my profile might suggest that I am almost a trusted member for some!
I believe that there is no absolute answer to your question, it’s different for everyone.  You have to decide on YOUR own personal instinct and preparedness to trust people.
common sense would suggest that people who have been here a while are more likely to be here for a while longer, I believe that the overwhelming majority of people here are trustworthy, but I wouldn’t send a load of money to someone with a poor feedback record.
if you are in doubt, FaceTime them or ask for proof of identity.
but for balance I just traded with a member for the first time this month for what I would consider a significant amount, purely on their feedback and rating, they were a great seller and I would not hesitate to trade with them again.
If you want zero risk and a sterile trade , buy from a recognised commercial trader (I often do) but if you want some fun, great camaraderie, unusual opportunities and a wee bargain now and then, use good judgment and trade here, I have found it to be nothing but honourable, and great fun.
also some of the fine chaps and chapesses on here have helped me no end with great guidance  (with a special mention to @James32 ) I cannot but recommend the site to all.

be careful but enjoy and trade away.

We're all blinded by nominal prices, everything is quoted in nominal these days because if they use REAL terms it opens up a can of worms that nobody wants to deal with. When we consider inflation we're all getting poorer at an alarmingly fast rate. Gold is undervalued and while £1650 nominal might seem expensive for a 1oz Brit, it's worth remembering that Brit today is CHEAPER than it was 10 years ago, not more expensive. It only feels more expensive because we've all got poorer. Gold has lost compound -0.53% over the last decade. Compared with historical performance gold should have compounded +5% in real-terms, give or take, so we're miles behind the true value of gold. If gold had compounded at 5% over the last decade the price would be +63% compared with today. This fits in with other longer-term stats such as the inflation-adjusted ATH being $3,000 and that gold went up by 67% during the Great Depression:

It's good to have property and gold because if property gets in serious trouble - that usually is when gold is doing well - and vice versa. But property will only suit a small amount of people because it certainly isn't easy or anywhere near as fun as many assume. But once you're set up, it's a really good return for little effort - especially once you have good systems in place (e.g. a 3 bed property in Yorkshire could make you £600+ profit a month - even with a mortgage - and you may have to nip out once to put up a blind that fell down - or send a gas engineer to sort a boiler problem. But you must be mindful of the rates - but the beauty with Buy to Let is that if rates go up then rent goes up. Not nice for tenants though).
There are members on here WAY more experienced and successful than me in property (I'm still fairly new to it), but I geek out and know as much as there is to know.
I wouldn't buy property at the moment as a price correction is coming (well, it's already happened if you adjust for inflation). Touch wood, I have had no tenants default on rent. I insist on a (preferably home owner) guarantor for each tenancy (I realise this makes life difficult for hard-working people who don't have a guarantor and have never missed a day's rent - but I have to protect my hard work when we have a government that are so unhelpful towards landlords). Also, don't forget you only hear the negatives of anything in life (landlords who are loving it don't say anything - they're busy enjoying their lives - it's not all the doom and gloom everyone makes out!)
Right now, I see gold and cash (in a high interest account) as the best place for money - wait on the side lines. Although the cash side is a struggle for many of us with the current cost of living. Then there will be property bargains over the coming years (until property starts to boom again). I'm going more hands off for now (too stressful and tiring!) so my plan is to wait for the S&P to have a big correction, then plonk a lot in that (after selling some gold for profit, but I'll always keep gold as insurance). Usually after a crash (whether it lasts 1 year or 5 years) the S&P will then do amazing (for a few years). Of course this is my assumption and I most certainly don't claim I'm right. But that's the plan! I'll also be investing in other commodities, but nothing beats gold, despite the annoying fact it doesn't generate income (well, it actually costs money because of secure storage).
Long story short: Gold is the answer for now (for me)

The reason why there is such uproar and anger about what happened recently is because it rarely happens on TSF. I am a relatively new member and this is the first time I’ve seen and unfortunately may not be the last. Considering the amount of trades and value, it’s why it has a very strong reputation.
There are a lot of decent people working behind the scenes to make sure members are legit, no red flags and you’ll not see it openly discussed.
I might just throw into the mix of maybe FaceTime the seller? A bit intrusive but you can make a sound judgement on a quick call. Scammers don’t like to be identified and potentially spread around social media.

There are many amazing sellers here. Like James said it would be unfair to try to name them all as you would forget some
If your primary concern is just being safe perhaps you should stick to the business sellers until you know enough about the private sellers to have an opinion of your own
Here's a list of all the business sellers on TSF:
