But this did ring bells:
" Case in point, a brash youngster who pushed through the crowd in our shop one day to show off his Aethelred II penny he bought on one of those websites I referenced earlier. Unfortunately, he was quite disappointed when I told him it was not real. He questioned how I instantly knew that and the answer was simple. In the reign of Aethelred II, they didn’t have plastic, the material this so-called coin was struck in."

Agpanda reacted to Mike22 in New Member just wanting to say Hello
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone on the forum. I have been collecting proof sovereigns over a number of years and I'm now wanting to purchase a few more proof coins and maybe some bullion to add to my collection. Everytime I do my research only about a coin Google always seem to point in the direction of the forum so I thought joining would make things a lot easier and I can always ask any questions that I have now.

I'd just like to start by saying Hello to everyone in this forum, it's a pleasure to be apert of such a community.
I'm Ethan in my early 20s, located in the UK and I started collecting/hoarding the shiny stuff about a year ago and what a year it’s been. I find that as the months go by my budget seems to get bigger and bigger as my addiction grew stronger.
I wanted to join this forum after watching multiple videos from BYB and wanted to gain the knowledge some of you veterans have to offer.
After reading through multiple threads in different sections I can safely say I think I'm in the right place and I hope to grow into this community.
Ethan

Today I bought the first 10oz bars I have bought in years. The rounds finished up what was left of my budget for that pay period.

Agpanda reacted to LawrenceChard in Has Brexit Killed off silver stacking in the UK?
No!
Despite my advice about investing in precious metals:
Gold should be your first choice, because investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK (& also EU).
Silver is still in big demand.
For example @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer has a standing request for 30,000 silver Britannias per month from the Royal Mint, although we have only been receiving 10,000.
We did manage a few days ago to buy an extra 20,000 from a fellow distributor / competitor, but these are for offshore storage, which legally avoids VAT for larger investors.
Of course, this still fails to equal the 3.2 tonnes of silver coins we once imported from Perth Mint, back in the days of the Credit / Banking crisis. that was quite a stack, a 7 pallet load on the back of a 7.5 tonne wagon, which I drove. (From Manchester Airport, not from Western Australia).

23 Million Gold Sovereigns Melted Down 1990 National Audit Office Report on the Royal Mint
Today I stumbled across an NAO report online, which included:
(g) The Exchange Equalisation Account has met the capital servicing costs of the Precious Metal Unit, installed in 1986; and the Mint have melted down some of their 23 million gold Sovereigns in stock, paid for by the Account, to use as raw material for the new Britannia coin. However, the Unit has so far been engaged only on commercial work and the contractual arrangements with the Treasury were terminated in 1987-88. The Treasury pointed out that the decision to impose Value Added Tax on gold coins and the fall in the gold price in the early 1980s had both affected the demand for sovereigns to an extent which could not have been foreseen at the time the new Unit was commissioned.
I was completely unaware of this at the time, and indeed until now.
I am only up to page 6 of the 22 page report, so I expect to find some more intriguing stuff soon.

Agpanda reacted to SilverSearchers in Another newbie here...Hi :)
Hi guys,
I just joined the forum, I started collection silver bullions about 2 month ago after being jealous of my sisters (as she calls them) treasures 🤣.
I got slightly carried away but there are so many pretty coins out there and I'm weak!
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hi 👋

Bit of a different looking sovereign rocker from John Greaves & Son - apparently made of some sort of nickel alloy. 🤔

I'm not so sure. People on TSF are a funny bunch. Members who are so attached to their stack would take with them on holidays. There are so many testimonies of members losing their stacks on tragic boating trips. Do you not believe us !!? 🙄
