Nothing fancy to it. just pick up what you can, when you can.
Started with just best value sovereigns. Bought from many sources, auctions, dealers, pawn shops, jewellers. just keep your eyes open for deals. As time went by and the collection developed that's when I started to seek out specific years and mints. I also try to keep my average spend or cost of a sovereign at or near the average cost of a best buy sovereign. As an example when I started I was picking up sovereigns for sub £200 roll on a few years and I was then paying £300. But the £ cost average for them might have only been £250 because of the number of sovereigns bought at £200. It's at this point in the collection I picked up slightly more expensive sovereigns. Proof, scarce or even a few rare ones. Time and the increasing price of gold has helped me here. Move forward to today and my collection has a rough £ cost average of £390 for the full and £190 for the half. Yet recently I have bought some 4 figure price tagged sovereigns. The latest is the 1937 George VI graded at PF63. There is no real secret, anything is possible with a little time and perseverance. Don't leave yourself short and only spent what you can afford not to need in the immediate future. Buy little and often. Have I made a few sacrifices? of course. I'd rather put the pennies aside than buy the latest phone. I don't need to frequent Starbucks or Costa for my daily choco moco frapachipolata coffee. Nescafe in the flask is fine. you get the drift.

This is great to read. Surely, this is what it’s all about. Another generation discovering a grandparents collection and enjoying learning all about it. Hopefully doing well out of it as well but nice to read stories like this that aren’t just about accumulation of wealth 👍🏼

That's the allegation. The truth is I did not make him do anything and I'm not in charge of the forum, I'm just a pleb like everybody else (except James)
This is a precious metals forum. Does posting the gold spot price 100s of times to farm karma make you a valuable member or show you have any insights? Does posting in the non-precious metals section of the forum mean you know about coins, macroeconomics or technical indicators?
Under the old system a new member could join and spam certain sections of the forum with tatas, random digits or soup recipes, and game their way to Grand Master within a month. I was a "Grand Master" after only being on the forum for a couple of months. The danger is people would listen to someone because they have a Grand Master badge. It matters most in the trade section as a scammer could game their way to Grand Master by spamming in a short period of time, then use their status to scam someone
So, the rules were changed to exclude the points earned in the non-precious metals section of the forum and to make it much harder to become a Grand Master. What value is there in being a Grand Master if everyone on the forum is a Grand Master? It should take at least 2 years to earn that badge. Under the new system if you have a Grand Master badge it is meaningful and shows you've been on TSF for a while (a couple of years minimum), you might even be worth listening to!

A little pic of what I've managed to pick up thus far, Less my recent ones. Just to try to inspire folk to part with their cherished sovereigns.

It was a very good question asked 6 months ago. I would say that time has arrived for many on TSF.
1g & 5g bars,  1/4 & 1/10oz gold, 1/4 sovereigns etc are definitely more popular, at the expense of 1oz gold and various proofs.
My smallest is a 1/20th oz but that came with a Panda set!  Don’t blame anyone for steering clear of the larger gold coins!
Can only envy those who a can afford to buy 2oz/5oz gold proofs…….🤢
    PS: I forgot 1/40th oz & 1/8th Sovereigns!

I don’t know what race or faith you are, I’d never assume that, because to assume makes an ass out of you an me.
I’m not Jewish either but the forum should be welcoming to all.
What I was saying is, why do you did you feel the need to say ‘JEWS’ in the way that you did.
Lastly, why on earth would any sane person be chanting for more bombs to pump the gold price?
If you do, you need your head testing.
That was a rhetorical question by the way.

    …….. wrinkly.
Ok. I’ll leave TSF now and close the door behind me.

We've seen a huge downward shift in premiums. Sovereigns only selling below spot or at a push, at spot. Ounces only selling significantly below spot, like 97%. Only things enjoying a premium are 1/10 oz and smaller but these are not flying. Sovereigns still seem to be king as long as they are priced right.
But as this new level for gold settles in, if it does, these premiums (premia?) are surely not sustainable
