Gee whizz, I must be showing my age, but who remembers way back when gold was just £1,500oz?
I do - October, around five months ago
    What do I win ?

Sterling has had a fairly stable year v the dollar..  if the BOE goes first.  And it should inflation will crumble soon..  the sell off won’t last long as the improved growth numbers come through..  FX traders are always looking three moves ahead

The whole world has been quantatative tightening with interest rates going up. Japan has been the only country easing relentlessly with negative rates….….this small change now could signal a shift in the yen catching up….we shall see…buy low, sell high

Holding gold is basically to protect against the truly dreadful state of sterling. They keep pushing for interest rate cuts here and it feels like the pound will tank like a rock if they do it well before the Federal Reserve. The Americans are lucky (for now) holding the reserve currency held by 60% of the planet. We don't have that luxury here.

I believe so mate. I raised my concerns with it few months ago and informed them of submitting it to NGC. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Sorry for not posting sooner. What you have  is a normal legend 1872 half sovereign with a die number of 103, this means the nose of Victoria points to letter O in Victoria and the reverse has 147 denticles which was the norm from 1872 to 1880. There also exists a quite different 1872  half sovereign with the repositioned legend which also bears the same die number 103 but comes from completely different dies,  this has an obverse where the nose of Victoria points to T,  and a reverse that has far fewer denticles 122. One of the RL coins was recently sold at Canterbury Auction Galleries. but yours is the first NL coin I have seen so far with the 103. With the 105 die number, again there are two versions of the same coin, RL and NL versions. which use the same die number but are come from different dies.
The Royal Mint report for 1872 shows that 402 reverse dies where used, as of today I have only recorded approximately just over half  this number.

There are a lot of die numbers for this year and there will be many not seen yet. Are you sure your one is not 105?
@dicker is compiling a list of all known half sovereign die numbers so he will likely know

In similar vein it was the first time I paid over a fiver for a sandwich the other day?
    Did the sandwich change?
Did I enjoy it ? Yes
was it worth a fiver ? Negotiable
did the price of ham or bread go up relevant to the quality of the sandwich?
OR was it the unit of exchange in between that changed that made a simple sandwich 🥪 over a fiver ?
