Shep reacted to Arganto in NGC: "NGCX" a new 10-point Grading Scale for Coins.
Pffft, got this beat. Send me your coins, I will grade them on a scale of 1-5 (10 is double digits, that's just hard). I will then take several high definition photographs and even a video of the coin slabbed in pure Waterford crystal. I will upload the content to a cloud or a rainbow or whatever, and sell you an NFT of the process. I will, um, store your coin in a secure location. It will always be yours, and you can even display your digital crystal-slabbed coin on your hand butter covered tablet/phone/14" Technicolour telly.
Boom; better grading, better slabbing, better storage. The modern world is just great!

I think Sal sums up my thoughts and experience of NGC and grading. They have the market by the 🍑 in terms of prices and desirability. It seems like a very inconsistent processes.

Three 70 graded coins makes for a good start to the day.
Thanks @GoldDiggerDavefor checking these coins to make sure there were no RM quality issues and having them graded by NGC with the first release label.

2005 Gold Proof Menai Straits Bridge £1 Another auction pick-up in the customary price area of spot+3%. The "Welsh" bridge was the third in the spanner series and has a mintage of 1,195. This leaves me short of just the 2006 Egyptian Arch and the 2016 Last Round Pound to complete my initial collection of all individually issued "gold and old" one pound coins.

Shep reacted to CoinStruck in Coin Palace - rare early British Coins
I am in Japan on holiday and had a day trip to the city of Kobe. While there I thought I would see if there were any coin dealers and found a listing for “Coin Palace”. Thinking it would be a typical local coin shop I turned up to discover that I needed to book a time. They were not busy and very kind enough to let me in to take a look around their magnificent display room. As I was looking at the first coin, an Edward III hammered gold Noble graded MS63, the owner explained that he specialises in rare British coins. As you can see from the photos he has some of the worlds highest graded examples along with Patten coin such as:- - the 1817 sovereign pattern coin; - 1817 Three Graces Pattern coin; - 1910 silver pattern coin with an alternative design for the “rocking horse” crown. He had 12 Gothic Crowns on display. An 1887 £5 sovereign graded PF 66 Ultra Cameo with its original presentation box. And lots more! I only wish that I had taken more photos.

Shep reacted to SheepStacker in 2022 sov or 1 oz 2023 Britannia bullion
Both bullion coins, so I'd go for what works out cheapest over spot. Which normally would be a 1oz Gold Britannia.
Using Chards prices right now:
1oz Gold Britannia (2023 QE2) = £1,554 (with shipping) = 5.7% over spot 4x2022 Sovs = £1,498 (with shipping) = 8.2% over spot
Despite what some people think, I don't think mass produced bullion coins will ever get numismatic value just for being the first of King Charles' reign, or the last of Queen Lizzie's. At least not in our lifetime. But there are a lot of stupid people on eBay...

Shep reacted to dicker in Has the royal mint turned the corner?
I don’t think so.
Personally, I don’t see the beauty or value in coins pumped out by the RM.
Where they produce hits they are re hashes of previous brilliance (Wyon for example)
I might be being controversial, but I far prefer earlier Sovereigns and coins from gold rush Australia and America.
I feel the RM is too commercial, and not driven by artisans.

Oh yes they certainly do…..for the dealer that is.

Shep reacted to Essendie in Today I bought.....
Today I bought my first ever 1/4 oz gold coin (just a 2023 bullion Britannia).
I got 1/10th oz coins before and a 5g bar.
When it arrives (plus my Silver Forum 1oz round) I'll have reached my targets for my first year stacking in both gold & silver with 1 month to spare.
That was 1oz of gold & 1 kilo of silver.
First purchase was last December.
I'll be doing my best Gollum impression over 'my precious' little stack & breaking out the hot chocolate when they arrive 🙂
