  1. Fabulous and useful info, thanks so much!
  2. Good to know, thanks so much Alun.
  3. @richatthecroft, @Alun Any thoughts on this question?
  4. Thanks Dicker, you'd have to assume that because gold is so un-reactive it wouldn't matter. You raise a good point about sovs though, copper spots seem to be the only issue with them, and they occur regardless of storage situation?
  5. Apologies if this has been covered before, I did various searches and couldn't find anything. I know Mahogany is generally recommended for coin cabinets to avoid tarnishing, but does it actually matter if only storing gold coins? Appreciate any advice.
  6. Old and new, which do you prefer? A lot of the newer sovs seem to be very low relief?
  7. 2017 Sov finally arrived, just in time to test my new macro lens.
  8. Old and new with exactly the same set up and finally making progress with getting a consistent set up that works for both. These both have the LED panel set at 45° horizontal angle to axial light set up. Also tipping the light forward 20-30° gives the darker gradient at the bottom of the coin to try and show field texture. I think I've got a G5 with nice lustre so will try that next.
  9. Thanks @Silverlocks yes I'm using a large LED panel light that is nice and flat. Surprised how much difference a small change in light position affects the pic. Will try some shiny new proof coins next to see what they do!
  10. So I've made a DIY axial lighting set up and just purchased a macro lens and LED light. Surprised how a small change of light position makes a big difference to results, see attached comparison. 1 is too flat, 3 shows lots of modelling depth. I realise this is quite subjective but I think 3 is the clear winner, what do you think?
  11. Closest I have is an 1887 Melbourne second legend DISH.M8. Pearls are similar, dots in neck , tail and dragon all look similar too. Weight is 7.99g diameter varied from 22.119 to 22.037 (don't usually use the micrometer but my son has 'borrowed' my calipers!).
  12. https://www.error-ref.com/retained-lamination/ Definition: A lamination error occurs when metal flakes off the surface of a coin or planchet. It is generally believed that the flaking, peeling, and cracking is due to impurities in the alloy which causes metal to separate along horizontal planes of weakness. A retained lamination error is a flake that remains attached to the main body of the coin.
  13. Thanks @GoldDiggerDave yes especially like the 1817, not sure it's quite straight in the slab?
  14. Very pleased to finally bag these two Georges.
  15. Thanks guys, trying to get all the different heads of which I'm thinking there are 5 for Victoria? Type 1A, 1B, Australia, Jubilee, Old? I know there's are different reverse young heads with the shield and St. George, but wondered if the obverse was 'different enough' to warrant a 6th head?
  16. Haven't compared many, I'm sure one of the experts will know?
  17. Is the portrait different between shield back and St. George Victoria young heads? Marsh p.104 says "Although William Wyon died in 1851 his Young head bust of the Queen was kept for the new sovereign." See attached comparison between 1860 and 1880 examples. 18. Response from Token Publishing; "Thank you for your e-mail and interest in The Gold Sovereign. Whilst a new edition is a couple of years off we will be doing another and are sure that Steve Hill would welcome any amendments. If you could please send a link to the forum, it would be most welcome. We look forward to hearing from you."
  19. If you post your die number updates @dicker, or PM to me? I will update the summary of errors/additions on the first post of this thread to keep everything in one place. I will contact Publisher to see if it's of interest to them. I have PM'd admin to see if we can make this a pinned thread.
  20. Howzabout a 'World's first' piedfort sovereign with 'Blackpool' running all the way through!
  21. Found this on p151 of Marsh which explains why the matt BU coin isn't listed.
  22. If it's a common problem how about a pinned thread where people can list their findings, and get feedback. Then notify the publisher and they can review for the next edition? For the greater good?
  23. List of suspected errors/ommissions/additions to Marsh's 'The Sovereign Series' book. Please post any suspected errors and I'll add them to this list. Publisher says "Steve Hill would welcome any amendments" for the next edition. 2015 Normal needs clarification. #343 5th head, not listed in book, but listed in price guide '343 Normal, Jody Clark portrait £350' 2019 Proof missing. Mintage 9,500 https://www.royalmint.com/sovereign/proof/The-Sovereign-2019 2019 Piedfort missing. Mintage 1800 https://www.royalmint.com/sovereign/proof/The-Piedfort-Sovereign-2019 2020 George III Privy proof mintage not known. #359 COA says mintage 7,995 https://www.thelondoncoincompany.com/store/2020-St-George-and-the-Dragon-Gold-Proof-Full-Sovereign-Coin-Box-Coa-p161954525 Should Brilliant Uncirculated coins be listed separately rather than included in 'Normal' mintages? Original post below: Marsh (2021 edition p.158) seems to omit a few 2019 sovs? Seems odd given it's not exactly ancient history? Proof with no privy mark, mintage 12,270 (https://www.chards.co.uk/2019-gold-sovereign-proof/2959) Matt BU mintage 25,000 (https://www.royalmint.com/sovereign/brilliant-uncirculated/the-sovereign-2019-brilliant-uncirculated) Piedfort mintage 1800 (https://www.royalmint.com/sovereign/proof/The-Piedfort-Sovereign-2019/) NZ's first sovereign Also found this while researching, I need one! The Indian sovs get a mention so why not this one? (https://hattonsoflondon.com/shop/popular-themes/by-theme/royal/the-2019-new-zealand-first-ever-gold-sovereign/) Prompted by a 2019 proof listed on Coin Cabinet's next auction. https://auctions.thecoincabinet.com/lots/view/4-8LQ2YU/2019-gold-sovereign-proof-box-coa-agw02355-oz The more research I did, the more 'unlisted' coins popped up. Apologies if this has been discussed before (I did a site search and both have been listed for sale but no other mentions) hope I'm not missing something obvious?
