There is a section of the forum to buy sell and trade, you could take some photos and post with the price you would like. (there is a 'quickstart' guide to help)
You could sell to a dealer, give them a call or if you go to their websites then they often have a 'sell to us' section and may list the price of the coin you have that they will pay.
Alternatively you might have a 'we buy gold' or pawn shop locally.
In my experience you're likely to get more money in your pocket from the forum, second via a main dealer and the least money returned form the 3rd option, you can always ask and if not happy with the price offered then keep your gold.

It would definitely be better to buy one in MS (Mint State), rather than the one shown in the photographs! 😎

You may wish to invest a little of your own time by searching through the relevant UK ungraded sales items, maybe by searching the forum using George V Sovereign first, then looking only at results within the sold items.

@muneeb If you’re looking for a 1918 sovereign in MS grade, you could always look to buy one already graded by PCGS or NGC.
There are plenty around already graded or put a ‘want’ post in the Buy & Sell section of the forum.

I think it is better if any collector or investor knows about fakes, and has access to information about them.
A really determined counterfeiter would be able to create almost undectable fakes anyway, using modern technology and equipment, and they would almost certainly concentrate on circulation coins. there would be no profit in making counterfeit gold sovereigns as the premiums are so low, and they would be detected if they were substandard (deficient gold content).
I don't know if anyone remembers, but a few years ago, perhaps 5 or 6, a Netherlands based private mint had tooled up to make millions of high quality UK £1 and £2 coins, and €1 and €2 coins, by the million. They were caught possibly before any went into circulation.
A search might find some news articles from the time.

1891 Sovs London Mint have a mintage of around 6.3 million.. I'd say between £380-£440 for sovreign of this year in decent condition depending where you purchase it... Just a few tips if you are going to buy more in the future...the shield backs tend to be more desirable, also look at the Melbourne and Sydney mints as they minted fewer sovreigns than the London Mint and are very collectable..there are many different varieties..do a little research you will be surprised on the differences.
The 1918 GV is a nice one to have as was only minted in bombay for that year with around only  1,000,000 produced.

Good luck with your collecting...you can't go wrong with sovreigns..but stay away from Ebay!!

Well done hope it's the first of many for you. It looks a nice coin.
There's a sale listing from @1stsovereignwith some victoria jubilee head sovs at £320 each.
I'm not clued up on the specific dates and mintages if there is something about that date or mintage or mint mark it might fetch a little more

Try Facebook message them or Twitter dms,
They always answer there. Shouldn’t be an issue, if it leads to a issue then ring your bank and they should help if eBay don’t.

1957 to 69 "Gillicks" are popular and tend to attract a bit of a premium on them, because most were non circulation so are in good condition, yet old enough to have historical value. The first decimal set, from 74 to 84 "second portrait" are probably the more affordable from those dates.
The third portrait, from 85 to  97 were only minted in Proof condition and cost upwards of £400 at a minimum.
BTW, if you are looking for interesting coins, ignore the modern sovereigns. They look neither gold in colour and have much less detail than the older varieties.
  21. Thanks
muneeb reacted to Richym99 in Advice on First Sovereign Purchase
My suggestion. Have a look at the Coins of the Realm and Coin Cabinet past auctions and see what has been on offer before within your budget, and what takes your fancy.
Suggest that you will pick up a George V pre WW1 or even a Victoria Old Head for £330 either on here or in one of their next auctions. Much more interesting than the modern sovereigns.
  22. Thanks

I don't think 2021 sovs are a special date. To me it's a bullion coin if you want a 2021 or one that is 'new' to you then choose 2021 sov. Most dealers have this on their website too, it typically doesn't cost much more than a random year sov maybe a couple of £ .

Look on the compare tab on here, Gerrards currently have them for £318.00 plus small change

muneeb reacted to modofantasma in Advice on First Sovereign Purchase
Most dealers have an option to purchase "best value" or "random date" gold sovs on their websites. These are typically the lowest premium.
They are just bullion coins sold for their gold content and unlikely to be a special collectible rare date (although I guess you never know) many people in here will happily stack bullion sovs all day. One thing to note is some dealers have another section where they might sell 'low grade' sovs which might have been mounted or damaged significantly, they might be a tiny bit cheaper still but I'd personally not buy these.
Equally if you want a nice modern shiny one best bet would be to buy a 2021.
  25. Thanks

My suggestion would be to join the forum as a member in order to:
    - Access the bullion comparison tracking page - tracks the cheapest coins by type by dealer
    - Access sales by members section. Some of the best Sovereign deals available anywhere but are offered on the forum but they sell quickly.
Get some trading feedback - lifeblood of being able to do deals on the forum.
    Best
    Dicker
