AgAuEire reacted to dicker in Cracking Sovereigns Topic
    Hi All,
Rather than ruining someone else's thread, I thought I would start a thread on some cracking Sovereigns for sale.  I have NO association with any dealers, but do look for Sovereigns her in the UK and abroad and I thought it might be interesting to post some Sovereigns that are interesting in one way or another.
I appreciate this a slightly 'broad' but in the context of many people not being able to secure Engravers series coins from the RM, I thought this might be interesting, because it IS possible to buy interesting Sovereigns, although one might not be able to flip (not my thing)
I will kick off with this coin - I have not 'stolen' the images so will just paste a link.  It is a PCGS AU58 with a good bit of dirt in place!  I personally like it because it is authentic.

Just for comparison, I won an 1887 half sovereign in the COTR auction on Sunday (26th).  Invoice was issued on Tuesday (28th), and paid same day.  I received an email with Royal Mail tracking details yesterday (29th).  Very efficient and excellent communication throughout

I bought a three coin set. The order went from open to closed on Wednesday and then I got a despatch notification via text and email on Thursday and it was delivered yesterday.
As for finances, the order moved from pending to completed over night.
Looks great and far better in hand than I had imagined.

Bye Bye - into safe storage you go - see you in 2026+  to review
This isn't going to do my OCD any good at all - todays 2022 sovereigns coins stored in a USA silver eagle tube ...grrrhhhh
So they're not rolling round loose in your safe deposit box, fits the RM plastic capsules reasonably snugly - all kept together

Guess this has to go back ffs.
And yes that's genuinely how it landed.
Apparently RM likes a joke as much as me.
Coin seems fine to naked eye but capsule is chipped.

15.40 These customers have been charged postage on the mystery box...
    Followed by:
15.41 Callum is fixing now Rochelle but if we keep a list can we organise for these customers to be credited and we will email them an apology and notify them of credit?
    15.43 Should be sorted now
15.45 An order's come through without postage. Good work Callum
(Just don't tell them I shared this with you). 😎

Not a specific date. But most definitely in December.
I’d say likely around Dec 6 as that will give them 2 weeks to deal with the onslaught of orders before Christmas vacation week starts. 😬

My set will be not be going for grading, personally i prefer the sets to remain in thier original case / box.
They may be worth more in a 70 grade but they just look so good in their walnut case.

AgAuEire reacted to westminstrel in Royal Mint 2022 Henry VII range (based on 1489 Sovereign)
    https://www.thegazette.co.uk/notice/3922613
For the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 500 POUNDS ·” and the date of the year, and for the reverse a portrait of Henry VII with the inscription “HENRIC VII DI GRA REX AGL Z”. The coin shall have a grained edge.’

So this seems to be based on the first Sovereign of 1489.  This was what the Henry VII Sovereign of 1489 looked like.

Of course the 1989 Sovereign was based on this “enthroned portrait” too, but it depicted QE II on the throne.
I wonder if this means the Royal Mint will be bringing back an entire series of coins based on the old Sovereigns, Angels, Nobles etc. That would be a terrific series to collect and could very well rival the Great Engravers series.
    Denominations:
    - 5 Oz gold and silver Proof
    - 2 Oz gold and silver Proof
    - 10 Oz piedfort gold and silver Proof

AgAuEire reacted to LawrenceChard in 2023 UK Gold Sovereign Design Forecast and Images
After yesterday's high in the rush for 2022 UK Gold Proof Sovereign range, I thought it was about time to reveal my forecast for 2023:

Yes, the familar, and much loved, St. George and the Dragon, but with more than a nod to the original Benedetoo Pistrucci masterpiece, we have envisaged it in it glorious gold colour, as is only appropriate for any gold coin, but even more so one with a 500+ year history and heritage.
Imagine what Henry VII would have thought if he had been presented with a copper disc, and been told it was red gold (although it probably would not look too bad in 23.5 ct gold.
Sure Henry VIII (Old Copper Nose) was guilty of debasing the coinage to pay for his excesses, but at least the copper didn't show through for a few years after they were minted.
Just in case the Royal Mint don't wake up to some basic scientific facts, and reinstate silver in their sovereigns, here is how it would look in red:

Although Doug seems to have "improved" it compared with some recent red gold proof sovereigns.
If you want to see them side by side:

I am happy to hear any comments, including colour preferences, and even colour prejudices.
It's time @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer got round to organising a poll on this.

There is a Sovereign focussed auction on the 14 Nov at the Coin Cabinet.  Split into U.K. and branch mints.
    A few interesting Victoria lots:
    - Ansell
    - Sydney Type 1
    - 1843 Narrow Shield

There are earlier and later Sovereigns in the auction, and when I looked yesterday only one Gillick (but in very nice condition).
There are a smaller set of halves that may be of interest to some including some early dates.

I have been asked in this thread and elsewhere about QEII sovereigns, and Gillick portrait ones in particular.
Yesterday I happened to test a few 1968 sovereigns, here are the results:

The important number is the 4 ppt of silver content, which is why it looks a pleasant yellow instead of rotten red.
Here is the reverse photo of the same coin:

    and the obverse:

I will test more when I get the time.
