CollectForFun reacted to Anth in Royal Mint Black Friday Weekend
Thanks to this thread I purchased my first gold bars (4x 5g), obviously at the reduced price at the time
I recently received an email informing me royal mint had done an audit on my account and that I owe them money, is this legit as I’ve just had a follow up phone call saying the same thing, I can’t find this number anywhere on the Royal Mint website but I’ve searched on here and it’s been linked to the Royal Mint
the phone call said it’s regarding the bars I purchased back in November, should I be worried about this ?
they basically said I owe them the difference in what they sold them to me for, and what I paid, I explained about there Black Friday deal (I think that’s what it was) and they said they’d investigate and get back to me

Finally got a reply and the charges were removed! They kept 3.5€ for admin fee, but I am not complaining 😁
However I don't think I will be going through this again. For the moment UK is out of my reach for purchases... 😕

I would recommend contacting them about the shipping quote in advance to not be surprised after the purchase. Don't know the rates for the UK but for here to Europe they charge $50-100 per shipment so could be similar.

Only bought to go with its brother!
Currently £20 under spot of what I paid now, so that's a bit of a bonus I suppose. I guess it's only really a scrap coin anyway. 😅

Today I fancied sharing my 'junk' silver collection. It's up to 2kg now and ranges from world silver, to former proof set coins, to hand poured items including my own pieces.

Hi, this is just a guess, but it seems there is similar damage, although at much smaller scale, right across the coin at 6 o'clock. One explanation could be that the coin was set in a frame and those marks indicate the spots where it was held by small clips to prevent the coin's movement and rotation in the frame. The cuts could have been made either to help the coin be held more firmly in the frame, or when removing the coin from it.
In any case, the edge looks otherwise perfect and the coin face does not bear any typical signs of being ex-mount such as excessive polishing. How does the reverse look like?
Also, I have a French Ecu coin in my collection with very similar cut to its edge and my theory about it at one point was that it was made to check if the coin was solid silver and not just silver-plated. But, with an object over 200 years old, anything could have been happening with it during all that time...

CollectForFun reacted to Agaupl in Sending Silver to Australia
Very new thing. Nothing to do with customs purely Australia post suddenly decided not to carry jewellery anymore. .. which means Royal Mail won’t, or try not to as this is who they use and the post office will tell you this. (Even some $5 fashion jewellery for a Bday present was rejected !) unfortunately we don’t have anything like SD and Australia post won’t track even if you ask for it (Covid measure 🤣).

Royal Mint/chards etc  have no issue sending and it gets delivered via Australia post so I assume they can due to private insurance 🤷‍♂️
people get confused between the carrier rules and customs… it’s bloody annoying.  It’s simply because Australia post is a croc of $&@&. They actively want to send this business to the private companies.

You can send anything (legal) tax free to Australia with no duty to pay up to $1000. Even over this bullion silver and 24ct gold is tax free but you may have to argue the point with border force depending on the day.

I have no problem getting silver and bullion sovs in, declared properly,   (Investment gold coin 71189000, or numismatic item)but I do keep it below $1000 (£550 ish) . I don’t for instance risk sending proof sovs. I use dhl or dpd.

Nb. any poured silver will not be classed as bullion but are easily importable if below $1000aud. @RiverbankSilver@arphethean @LiquidMetalsUK    Please keep sending Pms to your customers in Australia!

    Translation:
FORMAL STATEMENT BY THE ROYAL MINT
    STARTS
Firstly, we would like to thank you for forcing these issues to our unwanted attention. We understand you have concerns and we welcome the opportunity to ignore them. The Royal Mint strives to provide customers with low premium products at high premium prices, and we would like to reiterate that we take all customer feedback seriously. (NB until you buy something you are NOT a customer, so please feel free to spend spend spend).
We have a responsibility to ensure that we provide our customers with quality, authentic boxes from reputable dealers. These are not cheap. As such, our pricing reflects a variety of factors, not limited to but including, rarity of the wood, condition, their historical significance, demand, as well as the very expensive cardboard packaging. Before establishing a retail price, The Royal Mint carefully ignores price guides and market trends.
As we source our historic boxes from high end carpenters to ensure we can make enough money for the terrible condition coins, our pricing model is obviously quite different to dealers selling great coins in flips. We are unable to compare or offer comment on valuations provided by external sources.
With regards to specific issues raised with products such as the Victoria Young Head Crown, we have taken this feedback, torn it up, and are working to ensure that we never have to read it again. We always want our customers to make informed decisions before purchasing, but on this occasion it is not helpful so we won't.
We are always working to review and enhance the pricing of our historic coin offering and so we are not taking your feedback on board. As a trusted brand, we acknowledge that there may have been instances where we have not charged enough for the tat we offer. However, we would like to reassure you that we are committed to improving the bank balance by offering more for more.

CollectForFun reacted to Booky586 in Original Specification for Diameter of the Sovereign
I'm not aware of any source document or standard from the 1816 period that specifies the diameter of the sovereign. "The Royal Mint" by Ansell is a good starting point and it's worth a read.
In it he states "The diameter and consequent thickness of a coin are not determined by law, but by it's suitableness for the public to whom it is to be issued; consequentially the usual mode of arriving at the diameter of a coin is too make it of such a size that it will emit the most musical sound it is capable of."
Not bad eh, doesn't matter what diameter it is, so long as it sounds nice! 🤣
Here's a screenshot with some data on coin diameters:

Is it just me or is this the most bloody awful interpretation of Britannia?

Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles, has featured on every printed Bank of England note. This is the earliest example in our collection. She holds a shield and olive branch and watches over a 'bank of money', symbolising the wealth of the nation.
    (Thanks to Google.)

CollectForFun reacted to Zhorro in My Bank Have Put a Block on My Account due to a PM Bank Transfer Payment
I don't do internet banking, so this afternoon I physically went into my local bank branch in order to make a bank transfer.  I was sending my nephew £1,500 to assist him with buying a car.  With the help of one of the assistants in the bank I made the transfer and my nephew's name matched the account details - all good, or so I thought.   When I got back home, after about 20 minutes I received a phone call from my bank's fraud department.  They had blocked the transfer because it was suspicious.  They then asked me some security questions, but when I asked them to prove they really were the bank they did not like it!  The only way to do this would have been to end the phone call and then ring the bank's fraud number on the back of my card.  As I could not be bothered to do this I continued with the conversation.
I explained I had actually spoken to my nephew in the morning and 5 minutes later he sent me an email with the bank transfer details.  However, they did not like the fact he had emailed me the details.  They thought someone else could have intercepted the email and changed the details - even though their own bank system said the name and the account details matched up!  So, they asked me to put them on hold while I contacted my nephew to confirm the details had not been changed!  Now, as someone who is not very technical, I pointed out if I attempted to put them on hold, this would end the call.  I asked them to phone me back in half an hour by which time I might have been able to phone my nephew.  However, they were not able to phone me back, I would have to phone the fraud department.  As I didn't want to do this I said I would phone my nephew on my other telephone and the person in the fraud department could listen in!  So, holding two phones together next to my ear so the person from the fraud department could listen in, I spoke to my nephew, who confirmed the bank details he sent to me!
    And the transfer was unblocked!
I just don't know how you guys make all these bank transfers.

I was trying to sell the lot on Facebook on a dedicated 50p group, but they told me that they are face value only better to do shopping with them.
I said, OK, please let me know where I can buy more of this face value 50p coins, I was inundated by offers over PM, all of them at least £1 per coin.
When I try to sell them they are at face value, when you want to buy them they are at least 100% more expensive.
In my experience on eBay, I used to get around 75% more than face value so I will keep them for a while.
