I do actually have a 2012 and one or two others, nice little coins. Just stick to Royal Mint ones! Although the current prices for bullion ones on the mint site are a bit steep😮🤔🤔

    I'm the same, great thread.
Since I started reading this, I have been trawling the web for Quarter Sovs.

    Nice certificate, thanks for posting.
Maximum coin mintage does not always equate to actual coin mintage though, it's just sets the upper limit.

The later "BU" ones were different from bullion and more resembled proofs than bullion. This term was used for SOTD sovereigns. Not sure about 2012. Marsh mentions the strike on the day BU ones separately but doesn't mention 2012 in these.
What I find most puzzling is NGCs MS DPL designation for 2012 quarter. This is the correct designation for the SOTD sovereigns (but are often incorrectly labelled PF UC. So what are these DPL 2012 quarters? And do they look more like bullion or proofs?
Anyone with a graded MS 2012 quarter here?

Here's a list of the mintage figures for 2012 gold commemorative coins (Proof and Brilliant uncirculated, excluding bullion) taken from the Royal Mint website

The Royal Mint issue sovereigns in 3 standards, Proof, Brilliant Uncirculated (or B.U) and bullion, don't confuse B.U. with bullion. The list above excludes bullion. I suspect the total numbers shown in  "The Gold Sovereign" have been used in error and bullion has not been included, which is likely to run to a mintage of 10's of thousands. Does anyone out there know the actual mintage of this coin in Bullion condition?
Brilliant Uncirculated sovereigns come in presentation boxes with Certificates of Authenticity. If your coin does not come on the presentation box then it's probably bullion. It would be interested to see how many people own a Brilliant Uncirculated quarter sovereign with a box and CoA.

I have six in total, three of each.
    Plus a few Proof Quarters.
I think in 2012, they used the same bullion sovereigns for brilliant uncirculated, as the SOTD are basically the same as a standard Sovereign, however in 2013 you started to see a difference in Bullion and Brilliant Uncirculated.
Not 100% with this so would need more research.

I had a look and found this on the COA, now it is for the SOTD Sovereign, however should be the same as for the Quarter, it clearly states that the Quality is Brilliant Uncirculated,
however the mintage figures show that it is unlimited even though the amount minted that day had a finite number, so I think that the 2012 Bullion  and Brilliant Uncirculated where the same,
I will look up the COA on the sets I have which should/might be the same, quarters where not issued in them however, so does not really answer the question BU Quarters..

Following on from Andrews recent for sale post, where he identified the mintage on a bullion 2012 quarter sovereign is as low as 137 it got me thinking about how many we may own amongst the TSF membership. If happy to share, feel free to add to the list.
    I’ll start. I own 2

That's caused by the edge lettering. As metal from the blank flows into the voids in the collar, some of it is encouraged to come away from other places. I believe this could be avoided if the coins were struck more times and/or with more pressure.
If you ever see a 10p coin with a cud error on the reverse, there's always a sunken area on the obverse for the same reason - metal flowing into the void where the die has broken causes some of it to come away from the obverse.
Similar effects can be seen on old pennies, threepences, sovereigns etc where a "large" portrait causes a ghostly sunken outline to be visible on the reverse.

I wasn't 100% convinced that this was a tiny strikethrough or dent, so I bravely got out my Wera hex key set (the Perth Mint of hexagonal shaped tools) and opened up the capsule. I blew at it with an air blower, and was disappointed that it didn't budge
But I blew a bit harder in desperation, and it disappeared! So it was indeed just a foreign object on the surface of the coin all along.
    Hurrah!
But then I noticed this other problem that I think warrants it being sent back regardless - some finger-like marks around the final letter that I only noticed at this angle (photo is through the capsule).

    Another RM Return MOFOs
I was always nervous for the quality of this coin as across platforms they’ve been shocking. 5oz.
I would share pictures but it’s not worth my while. Ok, just one.
Off to a flying start- the hinge on the box was broken.
Obverse- three marks on Charlie’s portrait. Chip missing on the neck.
Reverse- George’s sword has actually been used and scuffed.
The circumference inscription is intermittently frosted. Marks and scuffs around the whole coin. (Not capsule)
Foooook you Royal Mint, you didn’t let me down👍
On my account, still stuck on ‘In Progress’
    Returned for a replacement.
