SpotGoblin reacted to harrygill111 in Proof Coin at Bullion Price?
@timsk here are a couple of simple fomulas that are handy...

To figure out how much pure silver troy Oz the piece contains:
    Pure metal troy ounces = (Weight in grams  x  Purity) /  31.1035 So in this example   (56.56 x 0.925) / 31.1035 = 1.68 Troy Oz
To figure out the metal value:
Metal Value of the coin = Pure weight in troy Oz  x Spot Price       So in this example    1.68oz * £18.70 = £31.45
To find a fair price on bullion pieces replace the spot price above with the going rate for the metal, if going rate is £25 an Oz, then a fair price is about £42.05.

Obvisouly a fair price is subjective and will vary for diffferent piece's finishes etc but hopefully this helps. As Pete mentioned, beware of the tonnes of commerative and British Isles coins. Unless you like them of course, in which case buy away!

I was pretty sure it was a fake but as I managed to get it for £30 but thought I would roll the dice.
I’ve contacted the seller and will be updating this thread as the saga continues 🤣.
And see how eBay handles itself.
    not 90% silver pre 1900
    weighs 25.73g instead of 27.22g
diameter is 37.9mm instead of 38.1mm Which is pretty damm close.

There’s a similar proclamation for the Quarter Sovereign.

So it looks like a shield design (for certain) and the regular portrait (potentially) for the 2022 Sovereign range.

    Hi, @Jelena
Unfortunately, your item is not silver, it is only silver plated.  The makers can be Wilkinson & Shaw or Weir & Sons. More informations can be found on this site: http://www.silvercollection.it/silverplatehallmarks.html , one of the most complete on internet.
"British electroplaters used a letter code for their "Plated" wares. The best quality was "A1" or "AI", lower level was "A", next level was "B", followed by level "C", and the lowest level was "D".
A1 (or AI)= Superior Quality = 32 grams on 12 pieces = 2 2/3 grams per table spoon or table fork
A = Standard Quality = 24 grams on 12 pieces = 2 grams per table spoon or table fork
B1 = Quality code found in a Walker & Hall spoon = meaning unknown
B = Third Quality = 16 grams on 12 pieces = 1 1/3 grams per table spoon or table fork
C = Fourth Quality = 12 grams on 12 pieces = 1 grams per table spoon or table fork
D = Fifth Quality = 6 grams on 12 pieces = 0 1/2 grams per table spoon or table fork".
    Regards,
    Stefan.

I remember being on holiday in a place called Castiglione della Pescaia, in Tuscany, Italy. I saw a very attractive looking Italian girl with a "69" tee-shirt. I didn't manage to get a photo, which was slightly disappointing. Later I saw a woman with "70" on her tee-shirt, and I was not remotely interested in taking her photo. A definite case of preferring 69 rather than 70!

    Hi All
I purchased a *stunning* collection of Kooks (as well as a collection of Sovereigns) from @Lucylucy for a price that was I believe fair to both of us, and of course done in an entirely gentlemanly way.  I purchased to build the collection (to completeness) and keep it going (as you may have seen on another thread).  The quality and depth of the collection was enough to break my new rule of not buying more silver!
In my collecting early days I bought coins from ebay and other non TSF sources (a long time ago now) that I was genuinely disappointed with, so it really has been a pleasure buying from @Lucylucy who was kind enough to invite me to see coins at his home.
Those of you who I have bought from will notice that I don't ever haggle on price - I pay the asking price if I think it is fair, which is why I think the forum is the best place to buy and sell, but there are limits to what forum members will pay for larger collections of well priced silver - so I think don't be harsh in judging by selling on ebay if it doesn't sell on the forum. One caveat to this is that if left long enough, I think listings do sell eventually but it takes time (I have approached sellers about items on very old listings and have found them still available).
Not everything that is sold between members is necessarily advertised on the forum (although I think this is not so common).  The forum (from my experience) fosters trusted relationships where members occasionally reach out because of known interests with items for sale.  This is something that I have not ever seen on any other platform, and whilst is not an obvious selling point, has worked very well for me, and I suspect others.

With reference to eBay I have noted regularly that two sellers offering the same coin -
Seller A starts bids at 99 pence, gets maybe 15 incremental bids and the coin sells for £35
Seller B starts bids at £30, gets no bids and the coin doesn't sell.
Fine silver coins are rarely sold below spot price and currently around £24+ at best.
When you have a full set to sell you are already attached to the set and feel it is worth something to another collector.
Unfortunately it is all about luck in finding a set buyer when your coins are up for sale.
Worst case a bullion dealer might offer you close to spot and without the fees is better than underselling on eBay.
Either sell the coins individually at a fair price and people will buy because they are buying 999 silver and adding a different coin to their collection, or hold until nearer Christmas and try again.

I’ve been watching Robert Kyosaki for some time. Initially I liked him too.  But on closer examination he appears to be non trustworthy. I signed up to his free “live” webinars twice. Both were exactly the same and clearly not live. They were simply marketing tools to sell you his overpriced strategies on how to get rich. He’s a successful salesman.

I would not pay too much attention to Kiosaki, he is a grifter that got rich from selling a book & board game about how to get rich.
Dont get me wrong I have read 3 of his books (Fake was OK i guess), but there are much more knowledgable & less egotistical & greedy people to learn from.
He will jump on band wagons and be not that knowledgable about the subject matter.
I bet he makes more money from his radio show, being a guest & affiliate marketing than crypto LOL.
This time last year I remember him knowing absolutely zero about crypto, now he is an expert (apparently).

    Anyhow.
An economic downturn is on the cards of sorts. Check out Kitco Its a much more reliable source of information.
I am not so sure about hyper inflation, but probably a prolonged economic downturn, like in the 70's.
There will certainly be opportunities for those who know what they are doing to invest and make moves,
when everyone else is panicking, selling & generally being idiots, like last year.

    I have about 30% physical metals, 50% cash & 20% stocks.
I will mainly be looking at Dividend stocks if or when we see a collapse.
That way if it lasts 10 years then I will still be getting paid.

With regards to silver your best bet would be Mining stocks if you want a decent return within 5 years.
It should pop this year i think though, they are very undervalued. Gold and copper too.

With physical, you cant rely on Silver hitting £200 anytime soon & anyway its usually
only in short periods(weeks or even days), so advertising, selling, posting physical can be hard work.
Plus who would buy silver at all time highs?

The apocalypse or hyper inflation if it does happen will not last that long I dont think anyway, outside of nuclear war.
Stacking non perishable foods, a water supply, items to barter (I stack coffee) & protection would be more important.
I guess you can throw you silver bars at robbers.

I like the metal as an inflation hedge (and thats somehting to be paying attention too atm),
but I still trade it regularly on price spikes (like in Feb and apparently now LOL).

You can buy paper silver on the stock market, but mining stocks are better IMO.
Plenty of threads covering all that in detail - 'miner picks' especially.

"I've been buying gold for a number of years now"
If you ask yourself why, it may answer some of the other questions.
"due to rates on fiat currency being so low."
I don't understand what you mean, interest rates?
"I've seen gold go from around £950 up to a high of around £1,560 within the last 2 or 3 years."
Sure, and dropped back down to about £1230 currently. As people were stampeding to buy at £1500 to £1600, it sounds relatively cheap.
"Isn't it only a metal and nothing more?"
No, it can be a liquid above 1064.18 °C, and a gas at above 2970 °C.
    What else do you want?
"Can you only make jewellery and coins from it?"
    No, read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold
    "Why is it so precious?"
    See #1
Most of the other 7 billion people probably think the same.
Remember, there are only 2 metallic elements which are not grey coloured, one is copper, the other is gold.
When you say "precious", do you mean "valuable"? Supply and demand.
"Why are banks buying it up in vast quantities?"
    Are they?
"Why is there a world gold council?"
    Why not?

I noticed you had "world" in bold. I guess that Scunthorpe Gold Council doesn't sound as impressive. 🙂

Realistically, any government can/could ask a potential seller for the PayPal information of any given year/month/day which holds all sales and buyers if they were being audited.
The change is more for eBays benefit and profit, I don't see any conspiratorial intent here.
eBay already tends to handle import taxes/VAT where applicable so I can't see this change helping or hindering that in any way.
Thanks for the information Becca, interesting read.

    Hi,
This is not strictly a silver post but I figured if I put it here most should pick up on it.
I have seen a couple of mentions about the new ebay coin / bullion selling regs which are being put into place so to try and pre-empt the major fallout and million questions I contacted ebay this morning.
This is what they had to say.

Hello, thank you for contacting eBay Managed Payments my name is Rob and I am happy to help you today. For the safety and security of your account please do not provide any personal/sensitive information.

Hi, I understand there are some new rules about selling coins ? As you will appreciate I don't want to break any of these rules so would be grateful if you could tell me how I go about this pls

No problem, so at the moment the restrictions on selling coins are mainly to do with the managed payments side of ebay
This is where we pay you directly into your bank account instead of PayPal - at the moment I can see you have not been invited to join Managed Payments just yet would that be correct?

So how do I set this up so I can sell coins without problems please Rob.

So as it stands if you sell mostly coins on your account we will not look to activate you into Managed Payments until we have the catagory fully passed.

Can you explain that. I am not a business I am a private seller and its my hobby

No Problem  - so Managed Payments is what we are calling the new process for seling and being paid on ebay - before this the transactions and payouts were handled by Paypal, whereas moving forward ebay will be handling this for all sellers on the site

Ok, so steps going forward how do I approach this to get it up and working. Personally I would much prefer to use my bank account than paypal

Well thats perfect !  We normally send you an email when we are ready to activate you
We can only take on so many members at a time which is why we are doing this in groups - if you have not receieved an email yet please do not worry
Seeing as you are a private seller who sells mostly coins we may be holding off on your invitation until we have that category passed on Managed Payments - which is due to happen this month

But you said "If you sell mostly coins on your account we will not look to activate you"
So does that mean I need to be selling everything ?

No not at all you can continue selling the way you are at the moment
Once we have the coin category fully passed we will be sending your email to register

Ok, so I do not need to do anything as it is at the moment. I dont need to register or flick a switch in the depths of ebay pages you will come to me ?

That is correct , you dont need to make any changes or take any action right now until you receieve the email from us

Is there a way to move the process along, what triggers the email ?

For yourself it will depend on how quickly we have the coin category passed for selling with private sellers
That is due to happen some time this month so the email could come anytime after that - however we are on-boarding people more and more so it should be sooner rather than later

What will be required for this new managed thingy Rob please

No problem, we would look for the bank account details you wish to be paid into, as well as valid photo ID for verification
You may be asked to upload a bank statement along with the details but that should be about it!

Thank you rob you have been a diamond

You're welcome! Been a pleasure to speak to you today !  All the best and feel free to contact us again whenever you need help

    Hope this helps
    B
